How the ‘Everything Shower’ Can Improve Your Self-Care

Forget bubble baths – the Everything Shower trend is inspiring millions of people to improve their self-care routine. What does such a shower entail? It depends on your preferences, but it’s all about taking the time to pamper yourself through washing, exfoliating, conditioning, and moisturizing rituals

An Everything Shower turns the mundane act of showering into a luxurious experience. There’s a whole pre-shower aspect to it. Some people dry-brush their skin before stepping into the shower, a technique that is said to stimulate the lymphatic system while exfoliating the skin. Others massage hair oil onto their scalp as a pre-wash treatment.

The head-to-toe pampering continues during the shower, from using a body scrub to shaving and washing your hair to deep-conditioning it. Don’t forget to cleanse your face, too. Additionally, what you do once you step out of the shower is just as important as the shower itself – you’ll want to moisturize adequately since spending long periods of time in hot water can dry your skin out. And, while you’re at it, why not do a Gua Sha facial massage or some red light therapy

Benefits of the Everything Shower

Yes, your skin may be extra soft and your hair extra glossy after an Everything Shower. But it’s good for your mental health, too. Tania Taylor, a clinical hypnotherapist and psychotherapist, spoke to Healthline about one underrated benefit – it’s a ritual, and rituals have a positive effect on your well-being.

“Rituals, routines, and habits have long been known to have a positive effect on our well-being because they support us in feeling safe, confident, and comfortable,” she said. “We thrive from knowing that the behavior we exhibited previously resulted in no danger, and so we strive to repeat behaviors that we perceive as being beneficial to us, whether this be relating to self-care or just the way in which we switch off the lights and lock the door when we leave our home.”

There’s also the fact that turning your shower into an at-home spa experience encourages mindfulness and reduces stress. It’s a sensory experience, from connecting to your sense of touch to inhaling the scents of the beauty products that you use. Also, when you take that time for yourself, you step back from the grind of your daily responsibilities and tune into the present moment. You send your brain the message that you matter just as much as all the other people that you take care of.

Finally, an Everything Shower can also improve your sleep. “There’s a joke on TikTok that it leaves you feeling exhausted and weak in the limbs, and it’s absolutely true,” wrote Isabella Sarlija in a Byrdie article. “To finish, I hop into my PJs to prepare for what always feels like the best night’s rest of my life.”
